Artist’s Statement
I’m a papier-mache artist inspired by the colorful folk art of Mexico—especially the fanciful wood-carved animals by Manual Jimenez from Oaxaca. These peculiar-shaped animals have captured my heart and fired my imagination.
Biography
To create and fabricate three-dimensional shapes, I explored papier-mache techniques for sculpting figures to use as whimsical art pieces in my rammed-earth home. Larger armatures are constructed with steel rods tied with wire. Smaller figures combine wire and newspaper. My finished pieces come alive with layered surfaces of paint, wood strains, decoupage, and various kinds of salvaged paper. Among my favorite subjects are imposing jack rabbits, dogs and cats with quirky attitudes, and quixotic critters with awesome antlers and teeth.
